Rosemary's Feedback

January 2009

This is my first trip to the project, I didn’t know what to expect as I dint know a soul there before I left for Australia. I have been on Aid trips before and the Dhaka Project is now the top of my priority to see how much I can assist this community to become independent, healthy and educated. I taught the essentials of Universal Precautions, basic hygiene, First aid and held many health assessments in the schools, kindy and nursery. Also completing a “community health in the home project”, facilitating a few families with rehabilitation (one client was post stroke after a severe viral infection and had some residual paraplegia), diet and nutrition advice for families whose choices in diet were very limited, and also liaising with the Project Doctor on ways to assist clients.

We need Western Nurses to go to the project and keep these facilities running. If you are studying please consider using the Dhaka Project needs as part of your study. The benefits on both side of the world will inspire you to greater things, and fulfill the wishes of the community for self empowerment.

The Bangladeshi people are beautiful; they live in meager circumstances but remain happy and accepting. The Gawair area shines with the beauty of the people in a way that not even the constant sight of flea ridden animals, basking next to stalls of hanging raw meat (perhaps your next purchase for dinner that night) could possibly make you forget.

A little goes a long way in this country, moneywise - $50 Aussie dollars will bring approximately 3000 taka, this is a very significant amount of money. New Water sources need to be found, pumps are required as is the need for school books for the children and other consumables. The school educates those who would not ordinarily be educated, due to their station and location in the communities. The Medical Centre offers assessments and treatment for the children and soon their families too, something not normally available to them.

A little bit of compassion and knowledge has an immense ramification on this community too. The importation of skills is vital to the sustenance and viability of the project and the empowerment of the community.

I will be back to the Dhaka Project as soon as I can raise the sponsorship money and would encourage anyone out there contemplating this endeavor to just commit and get on with it. The staff is fantastic, their focus is to love and sustain the children in the project and they have huge compassion for their countryman.

Mia's Feedback

My time in Dhaka, was unfortunately a very short trip due to other commitments. Nevertheless, it was an unforgettable experience, showing that even just a few days of your time can make a difference and is better than nothing.

I arrived (metaphorically speaking) "blind". It was my first time volunteering abroad and I did not know what to expect from the accommodation you are provided, to the school where I was due to teach. Fortunately, I was given an excellent timetable, and that plus the kindness and help of others, I was able 'find my feet'.

On the first evening that I arrived, I was greeted by Jewel at the airport who took me to my accommodation. The accommodation is very safe, clean and comfortable. There's a small lounge with T.V, and kitchen with plates, cups and cutlery. Be warned though, there are no pots or kettle so it may be an idea to bring a small travel one if you feel you will need it.

The following day, I was shown around the Dhaka Project, which consists of the health care centre, day care centre, the main school and the pre-school amongst others. I was also shown the tiny classrooms that the Dhaka project started off in. It's a credit to Maria (Founder of the Dhaka Project), the volunteers, as well as those working on a permanent basis for the Dhaka project that it has become as big and as successful as it currently is. I hope this continues.

That afternoon I took some classes, I was supposed to take classes in the morning also however due to the fact that I was being shown around this wasn't possible. This was a shame as I didn't have a lot of time as it was, and therefore highlighted the need for communication in order for volunteers to get the most out of their time their.

The children are very excited to see any foreigner and although they are well mannered and well behaved, some need further discipline in order to be quiet etc when told to do so.

My second day there was just as fun and busy as the first; taking lessons and then visiting the day care centre, before helping out with the food distribution, which is a fantastic idea in which each week the children receive food to take home for the weekend.

That completed my experience of Dhaka…… time permitting, I will be returning to volunteer further in the school. Hopefully next time I will also be able to stay longer as I do believe it would be a more enriching experience the longer you stay.

JEWEL FEEDBACK ABOUT DUBAI TIME

From Dhaka Team in the field.

Mr. John and all the teachers will try to help for fundraising, or any kind of donations. Then children went to each and every classroom, introduced with other children, made friendship with them that was a nice day for our kids (Mosharaf, Sujon, Sabina, Anonnya).

At last he came. then another Volunteer Mike took us to Jumeirah Beach, another volunteer Jane Kammage waited to take us to dinner and Ski Dubai till we finished our shower at beach. Kids enjoyed the beach because they never had been to a sea beach before they told “ Sir, We are so lucky for here because we have never been to any beach in Bangladesh. After shower Jane Gammage took us to Emirates Mall, there her daughter Kimberly and her son Mattew were waiting for us. Kim was so happy to see kids. She was waiting from first day to meet with us. First they took us for Ski, there we had so much fun. In Bonn we missed snow but here in Dubai we got Ice, snow, ski things look interesting me. Then there we met with Mr. Bon, and then we all together went for dinner. It was an Indian restaurant. We liked the food, we missed that food for a long time, after that we had Ice cream still I miss that. After saying goodbye to Kim, Bonn, Mrs. Jane gave us a lift to Solange house. Before nap every night we had to take shower because it was too hot in Dubai.

Day 2: 5th November:
We had a busy day on that day. We had our breakfast to Solange house then we went to Al Fada school. There we got a warmful welcome by 700 students of that school. They all were waiting for us in their auditorium to listen to our kid’s speech. We did a presentation same like others. They were so happy to hear the
speech from children. They thanked Maria for giving this opportunity to the kids of slum and making these difference. They also thanked to all staff and teachers and me for teaching nicely and looking after them.
Then the head teacher gave some presents to our kids. At 10:30am we went to Clarins office; there we met with our big supporter Rania Turk who is helping us a lot. Smiling she welcomed us then arranged some snacks for us and gave gift boxes to the children and also gave us tickets to Dubai Atlantis.
At 12 PM we went to Dubai British School. Our volunteer Kimberly showed us around the schools and each classroom and introduced us to every teacher, her classmates and also with other students.
Kimberly is one of heart giving supporter of TDP. Before our arrival there she and her classmates did some presentation and activities for our fund raise and the donated money they handed to Maria. We had a great time with Kim and the Students of Dubai British School. Then Florence came at 2:30 PM and picked us up for the Safari. It was an amazing afternoon for us. She took us for a long drive from city to desert where we had seen a nice sight of this Arabian country. In the Safari we rode on camels which was a different experience for me and the children. We never thought that we had a chance to ride on camel.
There we have seen falcons. Children were so curious to touch the falcons. There was a man who showed us how they hunt falcon, how they attached satellite signal machine, what is their food which is so interesting. After that we went to a show called “Jumana” with Florence and Atif . Before that we had our dinner we were special guests there, so it was a very special care for us. Florence friends Shumach and Gerhard arranged everything for us. The show was about a Arabic story with nice laser special effects and acrobatic dance and ended with drama there were fireworks which was designed by former Olympic firework designer which was fantastic and unbelievable.

Day 3: November 6th
6:30 we went to Jabel Ali school. We arrived a little late. There one of heart giving volunteers and our big supporter from beginning Sharon de Souza received us. We joined their assembly. The students of Jebel Ali School welcomed us with some activates. Maria, me and 4 of our children said thanks to all teachers and students because they did a lot of fundraise for us every year and also they donate lots of stationary items like pens, panicles, books, copies, toys, cloths every year for our children. We gave a special thanks to Lucky Stars (Sharon’s two little girls and one boy) who are working so hard for our fundraising from the beginning of the project.
Then Maria took us to Wild Wadi ( it is a water theme park in Dubai). We were happily entered in the park but we felt so shy to see the other visitors dressed so small. There we had lots of funny water ride. For few hours I lost my children because they were so excited, they rode one by one even I could not follow all of them. I was running to look for them sudden a time I got them and took them for lunch.
At 3 PM Solange came and took us to Maria then we all together went to 7days office, there we met with 7days editor Mr. Ali, and journalist Mr. Paul McLennan, there we had a Interview with them. After that Maria and Solange took us to Ski Dubai.
Marcelo was waiting for us. There we had another interview with Mr. Adrian Murphy, news reporter of Emirates Business 24/7, We had a great time in Dubai Ski. Children were lost in fun. After that we met with Capt. Mr. Marcelo’s Father. Also we met with Florence, Jodi and her friend Khuki; they were waiting to go for dinner with us. Then two of our volunteers Anas and Mirium arrived. I was just surprised to see all of them because they did a great voluntary work at the project. Specially I was so surprised to see Miriam and Anas.
We all together had a big dinner sponsored by Anas after that dinner Miriam gave some gift to me and children, Anas gave me a T- shirt of Adidas which I like very much because my favorite is Adidas. Then Khuki and Jodi took us for Ice cream, it was so delicious.

Day 4: 7th November
It was a relaxable day in Solange house for us because it was Friday holiday. At 10 AM we went to Dubai Mall with Solange, there was a big line at the entrance and we had to wait a long for the entrance. One of the Volunteers Mr. John, who gave us 1,500 AED for over staying and the ticket of new Aquarium where we saw lots of sea fish which was out of our imagination because we never thought that we could see sharks and other sea animals. After that Solange took us back to her house. Solange arranged a special lunch for us, she was always missing us because every day we had school presentations or invitations by other volunteers that is why she wanted to keep us with her family for few moments.I have followed a true love for the children in her eyes. We had a great time with Solange son, husband and with her. At 5 PM Florence came to pick up us to Dubai Marina, after that she took us to her friend Margaret’s apartment where we watched a movie then had dinner at an Indian restaurant. We had a beautiful evening with Florence and Margaret at Jumeirah Beach Residence.

Day 5: 8th November
That was our last day in Dubai. So, we felt that we were missing our overseas life. We packed everything, Maria arranged all the baggage of donations which we were being taken with us to Dhaka and also she gave some instructions on what we could carry with us and what we couldn’t in the flight. After that we went to Palm Jumeirah, the place we liked most. It is an artificial island, in middle of the island there is Atlantis Hotel. It is one of the most expensive restaurants in Dubai. Inside of that restaurant there is an Aquarium full of sea fish, after that Solange took us the most gorgeous and expensive restaurant in Atlantis. Lunch cost was 1000 AED but she didn't care, she was always saying she was happy and glad for got and met with us.At 11 PM Maria and Solange took us to the airport for our departure. It was a shocking moment for Maria and Solange. All way to our depurture I followed Maria and Solange sad face for losing us. Maria gave me the direction of Immigration and what to do, always giving instruction how I could go back safely with the kids and baggage at Dhaka Airport and always said “if there is any problem just call me I will stand here till you cross immigration”. Then the last moment they (Maria, Solange) was hugging the kids and crying it looked to me as we were leaving a family. Maria always telling me “Jewel look after my kids. Look after my kids”. I felt so sad to see tear in her eyes. They were waiting till we crossed our immigration. Always looked sad on her face were we ok or not?
Next day at 8:55 our flight landed at Dhaka Airport. We all were so curies to see our family though it took long time for our baggage; customs tried to make some trouble but I made them understand about the donation for charity inside the luggage. At least we came out with all of our luggage safely. Even we didn’t know, Mr. Azad, Munna and Shimul and kids parents were waiting for us for pick up. We felt so happy and free to get back in our family and the country.
I had a great experience in my life with this trip. I learned lot of things like different nations, countries, cultures, nature. I feel so proud to be with the children and have this chance. I felt those couple of days in children's eyes curios to know, to learn, to discover the world. This is the thing we need to build up in each of every kids' mind so they will not lose their talent they will be alive day to day.
I would like to thank again all the volunteers in Dubai who were giving us company and sponsoring us to see lots of places and monuments and gave us gifts and donations.
Uncountable Thanks to Maria Conceicao the founder of The Dhaka Porject, Florence Calvet, Solange and her husband Manuel, Sharon de Souza, Manuel de Souza, Rania Turk, Dr. Normy Ahmed, Mr. Jimmy Kotowal, Marcelo Taborda, Jane Gammage, Kimberly Gammage, Tony French, Alex, Tanvir Shah, Emirates Airline Foundation, Gems School, Dubai British School, Al Fada School, Jabel Ali School, Jumana show team. JEWEL'S FEEDBACK ON TRIP TO GERMANY

Day 1: 24th Oct. 2008
It was a hard day for me because I had to face a lot of problems at the Dhaka airport immigration. Along with the kids the immigration officers were asking for the pass from ministry of Education. Almighty Allah helped me to handle the situation strongly. It took 4 hours to reach Dubai. Our flight was full of Bangladeshi passengers, we felt like home.
After arriving at Dubai airport we had to run for our next flight to Düsseldorf which was in 15 minutes time. The airport was 10 times the size of a football field with a huge number of people carrying their luggage, laughing and excited. I had a feeling that we just entered a party. Very unusual for the kids of the slums. We were tired running and asking for gate no. 216.
Fortunately we got into the next flight, full of German passengers, in time. Everybody was just staring at us. I did not know what to do. Suddenly one of the Crew walked toward our seats whispered greetings to the kids to make them feel comfortable. They did their best for us. We landed at Düsseldorf airport at 23:30 (German local time).
Mr. Berthold was waiting outside for us. We had a long ride to Bianca's house. We had snacks; afterwards Mr. Berthold took me with 2 boys to his house for that night leaving the girls at Bianca's place. We loved the dinner and could not keep awake long. Mr. Berthold was eagerly waiting to learn more about the project. I gave him an overview of The Dhaka Project.

Day 2: 25/10/2008
Our first day at Bonn. After having an early breakfast we went for a walk inside a nearby forest. The trees were 150 to 200 years old; we could see the roots coming out of the ground. The kids were very excited to see the beauty of nature, the red and yellow leaves dressed the whole forest with an amazing look. Sujon, one of our kids, said "It seems that a painter just finished his painting". A beautiful countryside, the apple and berry plants with the horses riding over the fields, its pretty hard to explain how we felt.
At 12: 30 PM we went to HELP.de office with Bianca to have a rehearsal and prepare for the event. This is the organization who invited us to Germany to take part in the event. After practicing for an hour we went to Hydrant. The food of Hydrant was very tasty. We stayed at the guest house for the rest of the day.
Day 3: 26/10/2008
It was a holiday. In the morning I went for a walk a little with Sujon and Mosharaf. The architecture of Bonn city was so amazing that our eyes never fell down and the skyscrapers were touching the sky. We all were surprised to see the clean roads, brand cars and disciplined traffic rules. Then Bianca called that she was coming after lunch to take us to a park. Usually the parks in Bangladesh are made for morning walks with green trees giving fresh oxygen all around you. But that was different. With 360 degree Roller Coaster ride we could not believe the amount of fun that we had. The kids went for the ride repeatedly. Not only that, the park had a section of calm animals which are audience friendly like Deers, Pogs (Pigs ?) and atleast 20 different kinds of birds. We usually see these birds in Geographic channels.
Mr. Berthold came to join us then we went to Bonn Theatre, a historical Building, fully packed with tourists. Kept N Book organized a drama as part of the Festival. The school students performed in different roles of the German Fairy Tale.
Before going to an excellent dinner at McDonalds the kids could not wait long to see the circus! High jumping acrobats and puzzle games, just what it needed to end a day full of fun.

Day 4: 27/10/2008
The first day of our mission. From the morning a sense of urgency was going through my mind. The kids were tensed as they were going to give the first presentation at Bonn Art Gallery.
Bianca helped a lot to overcome the pressure by making the kids practiced a bit to get them acquainted with a new kind of crowd.
I was shocked to see Mosharof's confidence; Sujon continued to carry the spirit while Sabina and Annonya got worried on the stage. Fortunately the training from Bangladesh helped them and they calmed down to end their speech in a professional way.
Applauses from the crowd were piercing into our ears; the kids started to believe in themselves and our journey to a series of presentation and interviews got its first victory.

Day 5: 28/10/2008
In the morning we went to Mr.Berthold's office where we met Agata, a colleague of Mr Berthold, who took us to a trip around the Bonn city. Firstly the Botanical Garden of Bonn where we could see the green house, house made of glass with plants nodding inside.
Secondly, Bonn University. It was a huge building with a beautiful design. Then we went to City Center to visit some of the finest shopping malls of the world. The Ice creams were delicious. Though it was very cold but we didn't feel bad to have a fantastic boat ride in the so hard Rhine River. At first we couldn't believe but after so many shocks it became very usual to have a surprise every half an hour. Agata made healthy plan because we didn't know that we were going for Turkish Kabab at Istanbul Grill, a Turkish Food Corner. Such a calm and quite girl, Agata, made us feel like home. The kids will never forget her.
We traveled back to the HELP office by Tram, Mr Berthold was waiting for us.

Day 6: 29/10/2008
At 6 am we all woke up, quickly had our breakfast then Mr. Berthold came at 7:30 am to take us to our next presentation at Bianca's daughter's school. We gave a successful presentation in front of about 500 children. The school kids were curious to know more about The Dhaka Project so Mosharaf and Sujon individually gave them a brief idea about the things going on at the project. Bianca was very happy to see the kid's performance then she took us to a mountain called Rock of Dragon. Once upon a time there lived a dragon; it died on that mountain, so it was named as Rock of Dragon. We were lost in the beauty of the nature. In Bangladesh we have hilly area but no mountains except the Himalayas which can only be seen from few border areas. After taking photos of the scenario we went back to the guest house. The kids got tired and went to sleep early.

Day 7: 30/10/2008
Early in the morning we got ready for our interview at Deutsche Welle Radio. The interview started at 11 AM and went on till 12:45 PM. Mrs. Bianca introduced us to the audience; the kids sang a typical Bangla song about a Boatman. Then children told a story about the historical river Buriganga; Mrs. Bianca translated it to German language for the audience. I introduced The Dhaka Project showed a few slides. At last Germnan students and other audience asked questions about the kids life in Bangladesh which were smartly answered. The German students were so curious to know about their family, hobby, kid's ambition and story of the slums from where the kids came into a new life through the project. All the audience thanked Maria, teachers and the staffs of the Dhaka Project for this great work. The kids exchanged email address with their new friends there. After that we had our lunch at Deutsche Welle's canteen and we went to meet with HELP Managing Director.

Day 8: 31/10/2008
We had another interview on Deutsche Welle radio because lot of German kids took appointment on phone. We had the interview from 11 AM to 11:45 AM. It seemed we became famous all over Germany. We had to attend a lot of calls. Mrs. Bianca invited us for dinner at her place. We were shocked once again to see her horribly dressed then she explained us the theme of Halloween. The kids went to a neighbour's house to get dressed like them, Halloweens. Then we had dinner with Bengaly food because Bianca and Mr.Berthold realized that we missed our Bengaly food in Germany. The party was fun, very unusual for us and very interesting.

Day 9: 01/11/2008
We went to Fantasy Island. Mr. Berthold, Agata , Bianca with Sabina and Annonya came at 9:00 AM in the morning to pick us up. It took 1 hour to go to that place. It was far from the city. There were a lot of rides. First we had a boat ride in Pacific Ocean. It was very adventurous. Then on Roller Coaster. I never thought of such rides in my dream even. It whirled through the tracks. I don't remember the name of the next ride but it was most dangerous. After taking our sit a guy came to see the seat belts. When the machine was switched it took us to a height of 30 storied building and suddenly the thing came down effortlessly. The speed with which it dropped down was remarkable and at one moment I could feel the fear. On the other hand the kids were shouting and enjoying. We stayed there till evening to finish all the rides.

Day 10: 02/11/2008
We went to another city, Cologne, by train. That was the first train trip for us in Bonn where we visited the largest church in Germany, (Cologne Cathedral) which was built 1500 years ago. We went inside to see the sculptures and statues. Tourists come from around the world to see that monument. After that we went to visit Chocolate Museum. We had no idea about it! We were so curious that when we went inside we saw how they make the delicious and famous chocolates of Germany, their mixing, packing with new technology machines. We finished our sight seeing within 3 PM and then followed the same route to come back from Cologne.
Day 11: 03/11/2008
Last day!! It was a sad day for us every minute was passing and we were closing to say goodbye. The kids were sad as they had to leave. They had so much fun with Mrs. Bianca, Mr. Berthold, and their families. We were in family. We were going to miss happy and smily faces of Help stuff.
Mr. Berthold came to drop us; first he took us to HELP office to see the staffs for the last time to say goodbye. Then Mr. Berthold took us to Düsseldorf airport made sure the necessary documents were with me at the airport. He was with us till our immigration.
At 14: 40 local time we left Düsseldorf airport. For this special trip I would like to Thank Mrs. Bianca Kaltschimtt, Mr. Berthold Engelmann, Agata Wasikowski and other staff of HELP.

From Dhaka side, I would like to Thank Maria Conceicao, Mr. Munawar, Mr. Murad, Mr. Hanif Zakaria, Mr. Korvi, Mr. Munna, Mr. Shimul, Mr. Azad and all the Teachers.
Thank you every one!

Sergio's Feedback

This is not the school of Harry Potter, but I can say that The Dhaka Project's children know magic!

If you are thinking about volunteering, I strongly recommend TDP as the best volunteer opportunity you can find. I’m impressed with the work of TDP staff and I feel inspired by Maria’s job. I can not believe how much she and her team have achieved in only 3 years.

If you want to be part of one foundation for a short or long period of time, you should choose one that makes children happier. You should be part of an organization that knows how to awaken and highlight the magic on children. TDP’s children have the charisma, confidence, education and teachers that can help them increase their enormous potential.

I declare myself hypnotized by their eyes, by their smiles and their self confidence. Definitely, we are helping them to improve their opportunities in life, but they also have a lot to teach to us… I still remember the great satisfaction I felt every afternoon when going back home and feeling so grateful that I could spend with them this part of my life. I declare myself under their power; an enduring power that will last forever. I feel happy because I can see that my experience was not unique in TDP. My feeling is the same feeling you find in every review given by other volunteers. When reading their comments is easy to figure out that, as me, all of them are under the strong influence of children’s magic. Good magic that make me strongly believe that those children will acquire the knowledge and already developed the attitude necessary to open any closed door. I assume that at this point you can realize that this experience filled up all my expectations and gave me more motivation to continue volunteering once and once again.

THANK YOU JOY BANGLA !

Last week we were fortunate to have Mikey from joybangla.info come and visit us at Gawair. Joybangla.info is leading the way in helping establish an effective and sustainable tourism industry within Bangladesh. They have placed a great deal of emphasis on responsible travel in their reviews and their forthcoming Bangladesh guidebook.

We were honoured to show Joybangla.info around the project and show them everything we do here, and were even more honoured by Mikey's kind words about The Dhaka Project within his article on joybangla.info, (The Dhaka Project Seeks Volunteers Funding Resources). The article also includes a youtube clip taken by Mikey of one of our current volunteers talking about the project- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQHHeYwmUS8

Joybangla is also doing a photo exhibition and selling postcards of the photos.

They love what they are doing so much that they have decided to give 10% of every sale that they make to The Dhaka Project!!!!!
